Justin Akers was born on October 30, 1986 and hails from Deer Park, Texas. As a football player for Deer Park High School, Justin Akers was picked to be one of Texas' top 10 tight ends. He made 26 passes totaling 462 yards during his senior year. This averaged to 17.8 yards per catch. He garnered all-district honors in football and basketball in addition to playing on the baseball and track teams. With all these sports, Justin Akers still managed to keep his grades up and was a National Honor Society student.

After redshirting in 2005 he played in all games in 2006 and made a few starts. He averaged 10.8 yards on 5 receptions and earned his first letter.

In 2007 Justin Akers was the second ranked player for receptions. He had two or more receptions in 10 of the 12 games he played and he earned his second letter after his performance. In 2008, Justin Akers sat out of one game due to a foot injury but this didn't stop him in the others. He played in 11 games with three starts.
