John Jones hails from Cedar Hill, Texas. He was born January 17, 1988 and was interested in football from a young age. He played high school ball at Cedar Hill High School and the San Antonio Express News ranked him 82nd out of 100 local players. He was a two year starter and a top rusher in the school's history. He had focused on basketball from an early age so he was relatively a new talent when he chose to hit the football field years later than his teammates.
He had 15 scholarship opportunities and selected the Baylor Bears for his team. In 2007 he chose to redshirt. In 2008 John Jones played in 10 games and had 1 start. He earned his first letter. For the final four games of the season he was a reserve lineman.
