Joe Korbel hails from San Antonio, Texas like fellow teammate Joe Pawelek. However the two attended different schools. Joe Korbel graduated from Churchill High School and lettered two years on the football team. He was top on the team his junior and senior season for pancake blocks with 19 and 29. He was also an academic all-state honored player.
In 2007, Joe Korbel was a walk-on and chose to redshirt. He still dressed for five games. Off the field, he did well academically. In 2008 Joe Korbel played in all 12 games as a special teams player. He earned his first letter for his performance.
