Number one Earl Patin was born on April 7, 1989 and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He played football for the Southern Lab High School team and was a Rivals.com four star player. During his senior year, Earl Patin made 144 tackles and 5 sacks. He committed to the Baylor Bears during his senior year and headed off to play college ball in 2007.

As a true freshman in 2007, Earl Patin earned his first Baylor Bears varsity letter. He participated in 297 snaps and played in every game. He also received All-Big 12 freshman team honors from Sporting News and was 13th on the team with 29 tackles.

In 2008, Earl Patin was a backup linebacker over the course of the season's 12 games. He ended this season with 52 tackles placing him seventh for tackles on the team.
