Number 38 Derek Epperson was born on April 28, 1989 and grew up in Southlake, Texas. He attended Keller High School and was active on the football team and National Honor Society. During his senior year, Derek Epperson averaged 43 yards per kick and was awarded with first team district honors. Eight of those punts occurred inside the 20 yard line. Derek Epperson was also an academic all-state elite selection.
In 2007, Derek Epperson was a true freshman and rookie on the Baylor Bears football team. He did surprisingly well at college level play. For example he averaged 40 yards in five games. He was ranked number 9 in the Big 12 and had a 39.1 average over 66 punts.
In 2008, Derek Epperson was the starting punter for all 12 games. He totaled 16 punts of over 50 yards and averaged 44.27 yards on 49 punts.
