Brad Taylor was born on November 10, 1987 and grew up in Madisonville, Texas. His mother, father, and uncle all coach kids' sports in the area, which maybe put Brad Taylor at an athletic advantage during his high school years.

On the Madisonville High School football team, Brad Taylor was a three-year starter at the position of quarterback. He earned all-district first team honors. He was also a member of the basketball team and they pushed through to state semifinals his senior year.

Next up was college. Brad Taylor selected the Baylor Bears and redshirted in 2006 as a true freshman. In 2007, Brad Taylor switched up his position from quarterback to inside receiver. After practicing this during the offseason, he managed to secure playing time in 11 regular season games. It was a fortuitous switch and Brad Taylor ended the season as second among Baylor Bears for yards per catch.

In 2008, Brad Taylor participated in 11 out of 12 games with three starts. He made 8 catches, totaling 93 yards and one touchdown. He was named as a player of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
